Leeuwarden: Stenden Hogeschool, School of Social Work and Arts Therapies

 

Course Title: BA Music Therapy, BA Art Therapy, BA Dramatherapy

Duration: 4 years full-time

2 ½ years part-time for applicants with working experience in related fields such as artists, teachers or social workers (one day university, 20 hours self study, one year practice two days a week)

Entry Requirements:

Part-time BA:

• diploma plus minimum two years experience of working as an artist or teacher or of work in social care.

• personal skills and motivation (assessment in advance)

Full-time:

• personal skills and motivation (assessment in advance)

 

Course Philosophy and main theoretical approaches:

Five fundamental aspects:

• quality of life

• giving sense

• empowerment

• systemic working

• diversity

Main theoretical approaches:

• eclectic, depending of the problems of the client, including psychodynamic, behaviouristic, systemic

• experience oriented working in the Art Therapeutic Triangle

• Analogue Process Model (Smeijsters): the art-medium invites the client /therapist to be moved into a therapeutical healing process

 

Course Content:

• main psychological theories

• art or music or drama: techniques, reflection and methods

• methods in art therapy: experiential learning following the phase of a process: getting acquaintance, observation,  forming goals,  planning the treatment, treating, evaluating

• problem-based learning: cases from practice are studied with literature, film, role-play and discussion

• one year practice with supervision in small peer group (max three students)

• exam in three parts: medium, research and methods

 

Qualification Awarded: BA Art Therapy, BA Music Therapy, BA Dramatherapy

Language: Stenden University welcomes international students and it may be possible to adjust the programme to fit their needs.

The module entitled Humanitarian is delivered in English. This deals with general information about conditions when working in difficult situations such as refugee camps, poor neighbourhoods.

 

Student Exchange Opportunities:

Stenden University is able to offer student exchange opportunities with ECArTE member universities in medium lessons, one year of practice (Dutch language necessary) and humanitarian programme (see above).

It can also offer a clinical placement opportunity in art therapy, music therapy and dramatherapy for ECArTE member students. The likely length of the placement would be one year from the end of August until June, or from February until November.

Research Collaboration:

Stenden University arts therapies programme is interested in research collaboration with ECArTE Members with particular interest in:

• phototherapy

• arts therapies in schools

• intercultural aspects in art therapy

• arts therapies with the elderly

• process evaluation in arts therapies

• sculpting in stone as art therapeutic means
